Kitchen Myths

Facts and fiction about food and cooking, by Peter Aitken

Coconut oil is good for your health

This is one of those malarkey marketing scams that so many people fall for all the time. Coconut oil as the new super food, with claims that it lowers blood pressure, promotes weight loss, reduces blood glucose, protects against heart disease, erases wrinkles, increases energy, reduces inflammation, and counters Alzheimer’s disease. Nope to all these claims–y’know, that little pesky matter of evidence, of which there is none. That doesn’t stop some people, to the supplement makers’ delight.

Coconut oil does have a unique taste that some people love, and using it in your diet occasionally is not a problem. But don’t expect any health benefits. And, by the way, external use is fine.

I wonder if there might be a *little* truth to some of those claims, though… I don’t use it on my face every single night but my skin loves it, and the next morning my face looks a lot more refreshed, even on 6 hours or less. However it is a fat, and absorbed into the skin, wonder what detriments that has. I’ve also used it on cuts, burns, and minor toothaches with positive results. And it’s great in brownies and banana bread! 😃

Didn’t Alzheimer’s Disease increase among the population with the use of cholesterol- lowering medications and the fat-free everything kick? If the brain is mostly fat our bodies need the right kinds of fat. As with anything I guess it’s all in moderation. Just food for thought, no pun intended. I enjoy your blog and learn from every post.

You’re right about external use, it’s perfectly safe. I will edit the comment to reflect this. I don’t know about any Alzheimer’s connection. I am glad you like the blog!
