The name Pyrex is well known by most cooks for their bakeware, measuring cups, and more. But items with the Pyrex name are not all made from the same type of glass and will have different qualities. It varies by country, age, and logo style.

All Pyrex branded cookware used to be made by the Corning company in the US using borosilicate glass. This type of glass has excellent thermal shock resistance, meaning it can go suddenly from hot to cold (or the reverse) without shattering. This original Corning-made cookware has the logo “PYREX in all capital letters. Then, in 1998, Corning sold its housewares division, including Pyrex, to Borden Inc., which marketed the cookware under the World Kitchen name, while keeping the “pyrex” name for bakeware. But note the new logo is all lowercase. Old and new logos are shown in the image.

So, why does this matter? Since 1998, the non-Corning Pyrex has been made from soda-lime glass. This kind of glass is cheaper but it is less resistant to thermal shocks. This means no more freezer-to-oven cooking and even fridge-to-oven is best avoided. The older borosilicate Pyrex could take these temperature changes easily. The new Pyrex is fine if you avoid temperature shocks. There is an active market for the older Pyrex, with collectors and cooks scouring garage sales for lucky finds.

To complicate things further, Pyrex cookware is made in France (by a different company) for sale outside the US. Borosilicate glass is used and the logo is the all-caps “PYREX.” It will also say “Made in France" on each piece.
