Greek Yogurt has Special Cultures

No, 'fraid not! Greek yogurt is delicious and healthful but its cultures are no different from the cultures in any other yogurt.

So what is Greek yogurt anyway? It is nothing more than regular yogurt that has been strained to remove a lot of the whey (the watery part). As a result it is thicker, creamier, tangier, and usually higher in protein. There is nothing uniquely "Greek" about it. You can make it yourself by straining yogurt through cheesecloth. But with so many brands and flavors available ar the market, why bother? In fact about half of all yogurt sold in the US is Greek yogurt. The cultures in it - the "good" bacteria that aid digestion and health - are no different from regular yogurt. Strained yogurt has been part of the diet in the eastern Mediterranean for ages. It is called straggisto in Greece. It was introduced in the west and particularly the US by a Greek company called Fage (say "fah-jay") and the marketing people decided to call it simply Greek yougurt.

The difference in processing also affects nutritional content. Greek yogurt typically contains more protein, making it a popular choice for people looking to build muscle or stay full longer. In contrast, regular yogurt usually has slightly fewer calories and more calcium because less whey is removed. Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar and fewer carbohydrates, especially in plain varieties, while regular yogurt can be naturally higher in both. Remember however that most yogurt, plain and regular, have added sugar and other ingredients, so you'll need to check the label for nutritional information.
